How To HAVE Fun!

By Melaine Lee

On March 12th, the North Arundel County Alumnae and Annapolis Alumnae Chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will once again host "CARNIVALE," a day of fun and games. There will be game tables, Bingo, prizes, make-it take-it crafts, face painting, entertainment, service providers, refreshments, food bags, books and more, and it is all free.

We invite the HIV/AIDS community and their families to come out and enjoy the fun. The "CARNIVALE" will be held at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 6922 Ritchie Highway, Glen Burnie, MD 21061, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. A bus stop is nearby.  Please call Tony by March 10 at the office if you need transportation to the event.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is an International Public Service Organization with approximately 200,000 members that has chosen the fight against HIV/AIDS as one of its national initiatives for the 2003-2005 biennium. Throughout its history, the Sorority has initiated and promoted cutting edge community service programs and projects addressing critical needs in Education and Economic Development, Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness and Involvement and International Awareness and Involvement.

See the enclosed flyer for details.  Please come and enjoy the festivities. We look forward to seeing you.

IT’S A Fact

By Tony Teano

About 16% of Anne Arundel County’s population is African American; but approximately two out of every three new HIV cases occur among people of color.  Take care of yourself.  Get tested.  And if you are HIV+, talk to your doctor early about treatment options.

Dance & Desserts

By Tony Teano

On Saturday, February 5th, about 280 people were dazzled by an amazing troupe of volunteer dancers committed to making a difference at the Pascal Center for the Performing Arts at AACC.  Dance & Desserts was a benefit for Dancers Responding to AIDS, a fundraising program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the nation’s leading industry-based AIDS fundraising and grant-making organization.

HAVEN was grateful to have been invited to the event to ask for volunteers to become buddies or to help in other ways, and to show the Red Ribbon Reality display.  “I am only the vehicle for the kids,” said Collete Cross, who took care of logistics behind the performance.  “This is the effort of the kids who want to make a difference.”  Collette’s husband, Matt, wrote a poem to which a bass guitarist improved and to which dancers performed a negative space improvisational dance; here’s the poem Matt Cross created for the event:

We Dance Because We Are Alive

And Perhaps Because

We Don’t Know What It’s Like

Just To Wait To Die

Although We Should

We All Should

So We Have Compassion

Instead of Prejudice

We Have Romance

Instead of Ridicule

And We Try

We Really Try

And People Continue To Die.

So We Dance Because We Are Alive

And We Work

And We Sleep

And We Work

And We Sleep

And Somewhere In Between

We Find The Time To Apologize

And So We Are Here

And We Dance Because We Are Alive

Toward the end of the evening, Collete Cross presented a beautifully painted wooden sign to HAVEN in appreciation for being at the event, which stated the Dancer’s Responding to AIDS’ slogan:  “When AIDS is stopped, we will dance for joy… But until then, we will dance for life!”
