HELP ME, RHONDA!

By Rhonda Vous

Q.      Does circumcision matter?

A.    Medscape Medical News reported on Oct. 10, 2003 that male circumcision is profoundly associated with decreased HIV-1 transmission.  A study of Indian men suggests as much as an eight-fold decrease.   Findings were revealed in San Diego at the 41st annual meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).  There, Steven J. Reynolds, MD, MPH, of Bawlmer’s very own Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine said the study results "not only add to the developing body of knowledge on circumcision and HIV transmission, but they also lend great support to studies now underway Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa.”  Dr. Reynolds added that while circumcision "can't replace the use of condoms" in developing countries where "the HIV infection rate is exploding, circumcision could be a significant factor in reducing infection rates." Also, Dr. Reynolds supports that this issue be studied more closely before including circumcision as part of an HIV prevention strategy.

“Help me, Rhonda!” should not be construed as a replacement or substitute for a medical professional.  Always talk to your doctor and case manager about your health concerns.   Send your question via snail-mail or email, or ring up Rhonda at the office!

SAVE THE DATE(s)

By Tony Teano

December 1 is World AIDS Day.

December 9 is the HAVEN Holiday Party.

Neither of these events can happen if we don’t have volunteers to help gather gifts, cook, set-up and clean-up.

If you meant to respond to Mrs. Claus’ appeal a few months ago but didn’t, leave a message for her at the office.  Thanks.
