Support Groups

With a diagnosis of HIV or AIDS comes sensitive and emotionally charged issues. To help individuals cope with these psychosocial factors HAVEN, as part of its services, has seven individualized support groups. These support groups meet every other week and are professionally facilitated.

Anyone living with HIV or who has a loved one who is HIV positive is welcome to attend our groups. For more information, contact HAVEN at (410)224-AIDS (2437) or Email to: HAVENinc@aol.com.

HAVEN is able to provide transportation for anyone wishing to attend our support groups.

Current Programs

Common Threads:
The cornerstone of HAVEN's support groups, this meeting is for anyone who is HIV+. Occasionally, speakers and educators visit this group to inform clients about health care issues. This group takes place on alternate Monday evenings. It is designed for anyone who is HIV positive. Common Threads is a safe, supportive environment for providing companionship and for dealing with social, emotional, medical, financial, and beauracratic issues.

Addictions:
Addictions provides support for people in recovery who are dealing with both addiction and issues surrounding being HIV positive. This is not a 12 step program. The Addictions group takes place on alternate Monday evenings.

Gay Men's Group:
The Gay Men’s Group meets on the third Wednesday evening of every month. This group provides a place for HIV positive gay or bisexual men to discuss relevant issues in a confidential and supportive environment.

Brooklyn Park "Lunch Bunch":
A lunchtime discussion group for all HV+ folks that meets on the first and third Fridays of the month. This group is similar to Common Threads in design and function, but with two distinguishing features: (1) it meets in Brooklyn Park rather than Annapolis; and (2) conversation occurs around a hearty lunch.

Inactive Programs

(These programs may be reactivated if there is adequate interest.)

The Other group
was founded to serve the needs of the HIV positive gay, lesbian, and bisexual community. It offers a confidential gay-facilitated setting where members exchange medical and resource information as well as provides emotional support and friendship.

The Womens group
is a group especially designed for women who are HIV positive to share their special concerns and explore a holistic approach to health.

The Youth group
is a support group for children, ages 10 to 17, who are HIV positive or who are closely related to someone who is HIV positive. The purpose of the Youth Group is to provide an opportunity for the participants to share with one another their experiences and concerns regarding the presence of HIV/AIDS in their lives.

The Family and Friends group
offers members support and education. This group is open to everyone who loves someone with HIV. Group members explore their feelings and and exchange information and provide words of encouragement with others who may be sharing some of these same experiences.

The Buddy support group
provides peer counseling for issues which arise from volunteers' relationships with their HIV positive clients, information on health issues and red tape, and support when clients die.
